“Murderer, murderer! Unbeknownst to him, Prof Karabus had been tried in absentia in 2004 in Abu Dhabi and convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of a three-year-old Yemeni girl who succumbed to acute myeloblastic leukemia. The incident occurred during Prof Karabus’s temporary work in the United Arab Emirates in 2002, with charges fabricated by the child’s father seeking blood money under Sharia law, even though the girl wasn’t the professor’s patient.

This gripping narrative unfolds the tale of Cyril Karabus’s relentless struggle to prove his innocence and secure release from nine months of incarceration in the UAE. The story also reveals the extraordinary behind-the-scenes efforts led by Cape Town lawyer Michael Bagraim in the “Free Professor Karabus” campaign, gaining momentum through medical community boycotts, public protests, website petitions, and fundraisers for legal expenses.

The South African and World Medical Associations, along with the South African Department of International Relations and Co-operation, actively joined the battle. Dr. Iqbal Surve, a prominent South African businessman and former student of Professor Karabus, emerged as a key figure, leveraging his connections to the Abu Dhabi royal family. Making two trips to the Emirates on Karabus’s behalf, his efforts proved instrumental in securing the professor’s release.
